Kentucky Covered Wooden Bridges Trail

This 139 Mile (3 Hour 21-minute) trail will take you on a journey through the past when horse-drawn wagons and carriages were the transportation of the day. In fact, you’ll most likely see Amish farmers with their steeds on this trail. Covered Bridges began to dot the landscape, crossing the rivers and creeks of Kentucky, in the late 1700s. Not only were they built to protect the bridges from the elements, but these “timbered tunnels” also sheltered travelers and their cargo before the day of Automobiles. The loss of many of these magnificent bridges began during the Civil War when many were burned. Others have fallen into neglect and abuse and have been replaced by more modern structures. Luckily, due to the efforts of many state and county agencies as well as private landowners, six of these historical bridges of the past still exist in this region for you to enjoy. All of these historic bridges in Kentucky are listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
