The Chain

Home of our Pine Mountain Hill Climb this route is both scenic and technical and is home to the Pine Mountain State Resort Park. This 47 Mile, 1.5 Hour Adventure Through the Appalachian Mountains of  Southeast Kentucky is one ride or drive you will not soon forget. Located in Bell County Kentucky, high on the vaulted slopes of Pine Mountain is a large rock outcropping which looms menacingly over the small town of Pineville, KY. For years Chained Rock had been a part of area mountain folklore. But, in the 1930’s it became a genuine legend when a feat of the newly formed Chained Rock Club was reported in countless newspapers across the country. As the legend goes, the town’s children had for years been told that the rock hanging ominously above town could not give way and come tumbling down on them as they slept because it had been ‘chained’. In truth, however, the boulder had never been secured, but events in 1932 changed that forever when the mighty boulder was harnessed by an enormous chain. The hike down to Chained Rock is .3 miles one way from the parking lot and affords majestic views of the surrounding Cumberland Mountains. This route will connect you with other great routes in our mobile application including one of most popular, 2 Headed Dragon at the Crater, which is also located in Bell County in the town of Middlesboro, Kentucky. Middlesboro is the only town in the U.S. built entirely in a Meteor Crater! For more information about what this area has to offer click “What’s Around”!
