Canyon Rim Visitors Center

The primary purpose of Canyon Rim Visitor Center is to act as a visitor contact station for area information and for interpretation of the natural, cultural, recreational, and historic values of the New River Gorge. With an estimated 300,000 visitors each year, the center provides the park with a nationally recognized facility, revealing the beauty of New River Gorge to the nation and the world. This facility is also included in "A guide to Accessible Recreation in West Virginia."

 

Castle Rock

An unusual natural outcrop of rock at the convergence of Rock Castle Creek and the Guyandotte River. Castle Rock Road is a small road that runs parallel to the main street in Pineville. The entrance to the small park and the steps that lead halfway up the rock are on this street. Best visited during daytime hours.

Cathedral Falls

Cathedral Falls is one of the tallest and most scenic waterfalls found in Almost Heaven. This natural wonder sits at 60 feet tall, with waters plunging over sandstone and shale cliffs. Cathedral falls is both beautiful and easy to access – visible from Route 60 and with a designated parking area. Follow the short roadside path to get up close and personal with this mountain wonder.

About This Park

Surrounded by the beautiful mountains of southern West Virginia, Chief Logan State Park is a 4,000-acre haven with lodging, conference facilities, campgrounds, hiking trails and a variety of outdoor activities and attractions. Chief Logan State Park is one of the most visited facilities in the West Virginia State Parks System and is known for its annual “Christmas in the Park” drive-thru holiday light display. Chief Logan Lodge and the surrounding state park are within a few miles drive from each other. Separated by a scenic mountain, guests can stay and enjoy the amenities at Chief Logan Lodge, and then take a short drive to explore the surrounding state park.

Located near the trailheads of the Hatfield-McCoy Trail System, Chief Logan State Park is an ideal destination for an overnight stay after a long day on the trails.

Exhibition Coal Mine

Take a trip through what once was an operating coal mine. Let Veteran Miners guide you through the past and into the future of mining in West Virginia.

Guests ride through the mine in a ‘man car’ that holds 35 people. Tours last 35 minutes. Wear a jacket – mine temperature is 58 degrees year round.

In addition to the Coal Mine Tour, enjoy the Coal Camp, which includes a restored coal camp house, miner’s shanty, church, school and more. The Coal Mine also has a museum and gift shop.

Fayetteville

This charming town, only minutes from the New River, is a premier destination for whitewater rafters and fishermen, while its surrounding mountains are a favorite retreat for hikers, mountain bikers and rock climbers. Grandview Overlook

Grandview (New River Gorge National Park & Preserve) Glen Jean, WV Grandview provides some of the most dramatic scenery found in the park and is a popular place for hiking, picnicking, and sight seeing. Grandview is a peaceful place to relax and unwind while enjoying outstanding views of the New River. From 1400 feet above the river at Main Overlook, visitors are rewarded with one of the most outstanding views in the park. On a clear day you can see directly into the heart of New River Gorge National Park & Preserve, including seven miles of the New River and its watershed. From Main Overlook visitors can also get a glimpse of some of the gorge's unique cultural history. From here you see an active railway and the town of Quinnimont, where the first coal was shipped out of the gorge in 1873. Don't miss the views from Turkey Spur Overlook, and be sure to walk the woodland trails. Grandview is a great place to see the spectacular displays of Catawba rhododendrons that bloom here every spring.

Pinnacle Creek Trail System, with direct connections to the ATV- friendly towns of Mullens and Pineville, WV, is known for its breathtaking scenic views and proximity to world- class whitewater rafting and snow skiing—both less than an hour away. This trail system has direct access to gas, food and lodging. The trail system also connects with three other Hatfield-McCoy Trail Systems—Warrior, Indian Ridge and Pocahontas—to allow extended off-road trips.

Hatfield-McCoy Trails

The Hatfield-McCoy Trail System gets its name from the region in southern West Virginia where much of the world famous Hatfield-McCoy Feuding took place and where several of the Hatfield-McCoy Trails are now located. The Buffalo Mountain, Bearwallow, Devil Anse, and Rockhouse Trail Systems are located on or near historical sites such as Blair Mountain and Matewan. Come experience some of the best ATV, UTV, and dirtbike trail riding in the world!

Hawks Nest State Park

Nestled in the heart of whitewater rafting country, Hawks Nest State Park encompasses 276 acres bordering a rugged section of the New River Gorge National River. Long known for its panoramic views, the park offers a 31-room lodge for the comfort of overnight guests, on-site restaurant and an aerial tramway (seasonal). Below the lodge, the New River forms peaceful Hawks Nest Lake. Above the lake, the narrow canyon and rushing water create one of the most challenging whitewater boating waterways in the nation.

The lodge and restaurant is open year-round. Online reservations are available. Park map, hours of operation and special rates are maintained on the state park website.

 

Kanawha Falls

Easily viewable from scenic Route 60, just below the junction of the New and Gauley Rivers, Kanawha Falls awaits. Though these shelves are short, the falls stretch out along the length of the Kanawha River, creating an impressive sight. Kanawha Falls provides the perfect backdrop for a day of fishing or canoeing in Almost Heaven.

Logan

Named in honor of the famous Indian chief, the southern city of Logan is located in the beautiful Appalachian Mountains. This small town has much to offer thanks to its rich history. With Chief Logan State Park and the history of the Hatfield-McCoy feud, Logan is the perfect place for outdoor enthusiasts and history buffs to have an adventure.

New River Gorge National Park and Preserve
