Description:
The John Fox, Jr. house, a Virginia Historic Landmark serves as both a museum and a memorial to the Fox family. The house was built in 1888 and is filled with beautiful furnishings and mementos of the family. It was here that author, John Fox, Jr., wrote The Trail of the Lonesome Pine, and 14 other full- length novels, in addition to more than 500 short stories.

Portal 31 Exhibition Mine Tours

Portal No. 31 Underground Mine Tour offers visitors the unique experience of touring an actual coal mine by rail car. Visitors will adorn the traditional protective gear of the coal miner as they enjoy animated exhibits along the tour. Outside Portal #31 stands a black granite monument in tribute to long time president of the United Mine Workers John L. Lewis and a memorial to U.S. Steel District #1 miners who died in mining accidents. The site also features a 1920's lamp house, bathhouse, L&N train depot and load out system.

This is where it all began, the Dragon Slayer Welcome Center. The beating heart of Backroads of Appalachia, this building has served as the trailhead for HWY160 since the Non-profits conception.
