Natural Tunnel State Park is a Virginia state park, centered on the Natural Tunnel, a massive naturally formed cave that is so large it is used as a railroad tunnel. It is located in the Appalachian Mountains near Duffield in Scott County, Virginia.
The Oldtown Covered Bridge, a covered Burr truss design, served as a crossing for Frazer Branch Road over the Little Sandy River in the vicinity of Oldtown in Greenup County, Kentucky. Its construction was completed in 1880, and supervised by commissioners J. C. Irvin, John Conley, and W. A. Warmack, at a total expense of $4,000. 1 2 3 4 5
In 1972-73, the Oldtown Covered Bridge underwent restoration efforts initiated by the Green Thumb project, 4 5 and it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. 4 The crossing was closed to automobiles in 1985 because of structural conditions. 9 It was not until 1990 that a $440,000 concrete span was constructed downstream. In 1996, the state issued an emergency contract to have an engineer evaluate the covered bridge while it awaited federal funding for repairs. 7
Commencing in February 1999, a systematic disassembly of the Oldtown Covered Bridge took place, followed by a reconstruction process involving predominantly new load-bearing components. 6 Despite its original construction utilizing locally sourced timber, the replacement materials had to be transported from the Pacific Northwest, as the required dimensions for the largest timbers, measuring 14 inches by 7 inches by 34 feet, could not be obtained locally. The reconstruction was completed at the cost of $550,000. Notably, 90% of the funding was secured through a federal Transportation Enhancement Program grant, with the remaining 10% derived from state funds.
The restored Oldtown Covered Bridge was dedicated by Transportation Secretary James Codell and other dignitaries on September 3. 8
Pappy’s Log Cabin sits in the middle of a secluded 77 acres of West Virginia Mountain Forest that you and your group will have ALL TO YOURSELVES. We are located just minutes from The Hatfield McCoy Ivy Branch Trail in Lincoln County West Virginia. You can drive your ATV directly to the trail. The Cabin is located within minutes of the Little Coal River, a great “lazy river” for kayaking. Our pond is full of fish, is equipped with a zip line and boats. We offer swimming and fishing, along with trail hiking, nature walks, outdoor fire pit and a 125 yard shooting range.
Furnished with many antiques, books and hymnals, the cabin makes a perfect setting for family singing and story telling. Some of the cabin’s amenities include two stone fireplaces that heats the cabin with natural gas logs. All you have to do is push a button to get the fire started, the cabin heat is thermostat controlled. The cabin is outfitted with a cathedral wood ceiling in the Great Room with exposed beams. The sleeping quarters are comprised of three primary spaces – the Master Bedroom which has a King Size Bed, two sets of bunkbeds and a 1/2 bath; the Balcony Bedroom with a full size bed; and the Living Room with hide-a-couch and a hide-a-chair. Off of the Great Room, the full bathroom is located under the balcony area and is equipped with a shower, sink, linen closet and commode. The kitchen is also under the balcony area containing an island, a 1940s model gas refrigerator, a natural gas cooking stove, sink and eat-in bar. The front porch of the cabin is outfitted with enough tables and chairs to comfortably sit the entire guest list, a gas grill with side burner (we supply the propane), rocking chairs and a six foot swing.
Pickett Civilian Conservation Corps Memorial State Park is a Tennessee state park in the upper Cumberland Mountains. It is located in Pickett County, northeast of the city of Jamestown, and is adjacent to the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area.
Pickett CCC Memorial State Park lies within the 20,887-acres Pickett State Forest and is adjacent to the massive 125,000 acre Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area. In 1933, the Stearns Coal and Lumber Company donated nearly 12,000 acres of land to the State of Tennessee to be developed as a forest recreational area. Initial development of the area by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) occurred between 1934 through 1942. The CCC constructed hiking trails, five rustic cabins, a recreation lodge, a ranger station, and a 12-acre lake. The park memorializes and preserves the unique work of the CCC who first developed the park.
In 2015, Pickett CCC Memorial State Park and Pogue Creek Canyon State Natural Area earned Silver-tier International Dark Sky Park designation. It became the first state park in the Southeast to gain this prestigious recognition. Visitors can enjoy sweeping, rich views of the night sky similar to those found in many of the Western states.

Portal No. 31 Underground Mine Tour offers visitors the unique experience of touring an actual coal mine by rail car. Visitors will adorn the traditional protective gear of the coal miner as they enjoy animated exhibits along the tour. Outside Portal #31 stands a black granite monument in tribute to long time president of the United Mine Workers John L. Lewis and a memorial to U.S. Steel District #1 miners who died in mining accidents. The site also features a 1920’s lamp house, bathhouse, L&N train depot and load out system.
