Our Mission
To enrich people’s lives in our community and the southern West Virginia area by offering health, educational, recreational and cultural opportunities in a moral environment.
As a young man Larry Joe Harless vowed that when he grew up and made some money he would come back to his hometown and build something for the youth in Gilbert.
Larry Joe passed away in 1995. In his honor, his father and mother, James H. "Buck" and June Harless, contributed the construction cost of the 55,000 square foot building, which became the Community Center. This allowed the LJHCC Foundation to utilize the money raised through donations and contributions from the community for the operating cost of the Center.
Sadly June Harless passed away in April 1999 just prior to the opening of the LJHCC.
The Larry Joe Harless Community Center has become an integral part of the community at large.

Backroads of Appalachia is a non-profit organization with a passion and empathy for the Appalachian Region, driving economic development, job training and opportunity to the poverty stricken areas of Appalachia through tourism and motor sports.
This is where it all began, the Dragon Slayer Welcome Center. The beating heart of Backroads of Appalachia, this building has served as the trailhead for HWY160 since the Non-profits conception. Be sure to stop in and say hello, get your pictures taken, sign the wall, and get some merch from the very building that started everything you see today. Thank you all for your continued support.
