Coal Train 421

Take a trip on the trail showcasing Eastern Kentucky’s best-hidden gems. On this 130-mile trail route, you’ll step back into Eastern Kentucky’s past life traveling through the towns and riding the roads that built the United States when Kentucky Coal fueled the industrial revolution and U.S. Power and Steel Production. This trail showcases many small towns that were the backbone of America’s coal industry as you travel through the “Deep Dark Hills of Eastern Kentucky,” as Patty Loveless would say. As one of our few trails with interstate access, the start of Coal Train 421 begins right off I-75 in Richmond, Kentucky takes you through the towns of Jackson, Hyden, Manchester, and ends right in the heart of Downtown Harlan, Kentucky. Once in Harlan, check out one of their “Uniquely Appalachian” shops on main street, and grab dinner with your crew while in town- we hear the Portal and the Harlan County Beer Company are amazing and have something for everyone.
