Long known for its panoramic views, the park offers a 31-room lodge for the comfort of overnight guests, on-site restaurant and an aerial tramway (seasonal). Below the lodge, the New River forms peaceful Hawks Nest Lake. Above the lake, the narrow canyon and rushing water create one of the most challenging whitewater boating waterways in the nation.

The lodge and restaurant is open year-round. Online reservations are available. Park map, hours of operation and special rates are maintained on the state park website.

High Knob Lookout Tower

The High Knob area of Stone Mountain forms one of the greatest natural areas in the eastern United States. Today its calcareous heart has been breached by massive erosion to expose an ecologically renowned  landscape which stretches from the Powell Valley area of Wise County, southwest across the Powell River Valley of Lee County to the Norris Lake of Tennessee. Drainage from High Knob has also formed  complex conduit systems which led to formation of the magnificent Natural Tunnel.

High Knob Scenic Tower

At the peak of High Knob Mountain stood one of the few remaining fire towers of the Appalachian Mountains. Built in 1938–39 by the Civilian Conservation Corps, the original structure was a 14′ × 14′ wooden house. The most recent three-story structure was built by the Flat woods Job Corps in 1978–79. High Knob’s fire tower is listed in the National Historic Lookout Registry.
